Hurricane Hummers

Even hurrican Irene couldn't stand up to the ALMIGHTY....hummingbird? Haha. You know ever since I was little I was fascinated and curious were birds went during severe weather. The answer? Nowere special really. I was amazed by the furious energy these ruby throated hummingbirds had. A 70mph gust of wind would bend the crepe myrtle bush that they perched in and when the wind gave a hint of a break, they made a mad dash to get some delish sugar water then back to the bush. Sometimes one would get caught with a gust in mid-dash and get barrel rolled across the lawn. But they always got back up ready to roll with some more punches. I also witnessed mockingbirds, robins, starlings, swifts, killdeer, finches and sparrows all feeding and flying with surprising ease despite the pounding weather. We def. share our planet with some tough critters!
